28How to deal with a child who’s lying.

Kids lie but so do adults. Learning how to lie and how to say the truth is a part of a child’s development. Children start lying usually around 3 years old because they tend to get confused between reality, dreams and wishes. Their lies become more developed between 4 and 6 years old when their verbal language is good enough.

By age, their lies become more complicated because they are better at understanding how people think and how to lie without getting caught.

Telling the truth is important, and parents play a vital role in teaching their children truthfulness.

To encourage them to say the truth its good to:

-Know why your child is lying, and what message he wants to express.

-Avoid situations where your child feels he needs to lie.

-Make your child feel good about himself by praising him and giving him attention.

-Don’t be very strict and aggressive in case your child lied, use appropriate reactions/situations.

-Read books to your child about the importance of honesty.

-Don’t tell your child he is a liar; it might lead to more lies
